Arizona: A Critical Swing State Shaping America

Arizona ranks among the seven key swing states essential to winning the U.S. Presidency, giving it outsized influence in national politics.

The state leads with one of the nation’s strongest school choice programs. Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESA) let parents direct funds to private schools, charter schools, micro-schools, homeschooling, or other tailored educational options that best fit their child’s needs.
Population: 7,623,818 residents.

Registered voters: Approximately 4.34–4.42 million (latest official April 2026 figure: 4,340,860).

Republican: ~1.54–1.57 million (≈35.5%)

Democratic: ~1.22–1.24 million (≈28.1%)

Independent/Other: ~1.50–1.61 million (≈34.5–36.4%)

Despite a Republican voter registration advantage, Arizona currently has two Democratic U.S. Senators, a Democratic Governor (Katie Hobbs), Democratic Secretary of State (Adrian Fontes), and Democratic Attorney General. This mismatch has fueled widespread concerns about election integrity and administration.
In 2020, Arizona was called for Joe Biden while counting continued. At the time, Republican Doug Ducey was Governor, Adrian Fontes (Democrat) served as Maricopa County Recorder, and Katie Hobbs (Democrat) was Secretary of State. Reports of irregularities led to intense scrutiny, with some whistleblowers feeling silenced.

Voters replaced Fontes with Republican Stephen Richer in 2020. Richer later faced criticism for donations to Democrats, attending Democratic events, and collaborating with Fontes. In 2022, Fontes won the Secretary of State race, and Hobbs won the governorship—overseeing her own election as Secretary of State against Kari Lake.

Public demand for stronger election oversight helped elect Justin Heap (Republican) as Maricopa County Recorder in 2024, replacing Richer.

Ongoing Conflict in Maricopa County

A major legal and operational dispute exists between Recorder Justin Heap and the Republican-controlled Maricopa County Board of Supervisors over election responsibilities.

Core Issues:

Control of functions:

Heap argues the Board unlawfully took authority (via a Shared Services Agreement with predecessor Richer) over IT systems/staff, servers, databases, software, websites, ballot drop boxes, early voting sites, and related resources. He says this violates state law giving the Recorder specific duties like voter registration, mail/early ballots, and aspects of in-person early voting.

The Board shifted Recorder’s Office IT personnel and infrastructure to its Elections Department.

Funding and Oversight: Disputes over funding leverage and good-faith negotiation.

Timeline:

Heap filed suit in June 2025 (supported by America First Legal).

On April 16, 2026, Superior Court Judge Scott Blaney ruled largely in Heap’s favor, ordering the return of IT staff/systems and limiting the Board’s unilateral control.

The Board appealed and sought a stay; the legal battle continues as of mid-May 2026.
Both sides are Republican, highlighting internal tensions over control, transparency, and integrity in Arizona’s largest county.
Arizona has 15 counties, but Maricopa County dominates:

Population: ~4.69 million (July 2025 estimate) — about 61% of the state’s total.
It ranks as the 4th most populous county in the U.S. (behind Los Angeles, Cook/Chicago, and Harris/Houston).
This concentration means one Board of Supervisors and one Recorder, working with the Secretary of State, wield enormous influence over statewide outcomes. Arizona has a Republican-majority State Legislature, making secure, transparent elections a priority for ensuring every voter’s voice counts.
Support strong leadership:

A Republican Governor is seen as critical by many. U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs is a leading candidate for Governor in 2026, endorsed by figures like the late Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA.

Secretary of State race:

State Rep. Alexander Kolodin and former AZGOP Chair Gina Swoboda are competing in the Republican primary (July 2026). Debates center on election integrity, voter rolls, and policy differences. Swoboda is a RINO who belittles school choice, has a history of not supporting GOP poll watchers that have been disenfranchised, and taking a stand against President Trump’s efforts to make federal policy regarding election integrity. She also is against defunding PBS while retorting “where would people get their news?”

Local action: Boards of Supervisors, City Councils, and precinct-level involvement matter greatly. Elections are won (and administered) locally.

Counter outside influence: In 2024, heavy outside spending affected ballot measures on abortion and a proposed jungle primary (the latter was defeated).

Arizona has more registered Republicans than any other party, yet Democrats hold key statewide offices and certain policies have passed via ballot initiatives. Many see this as a call to organize, volunteer, support candidates focused on integrity, and engage at every level to restore confidence in the process.
